10 Small Bedroom Wardrobe Designs That Are Easy To Maintain
Based in Mumbai, interior design experts at Garrison Grove, deal with two constant challenges - space constraints and humid weather.
Small homes with small bedrooms mean that people want wardrobes that are lean and do not make the room feel cramped - while still offering a lot of storage space for them. Humid weather means that wood wells up, shutters get warped, finishes start peeling and clothes end up smelling musty.
Here are ten small bedroom wardrobe designs that are low maintenance, are easy to use, and look elegant:
- Use anti-warp boards for sliding shutters.
Anti-warp boards are high-density engineered boards. They don’t expand when the moisture is high, especially during monsoons. That makes them a good choice for sliding shutter wardrobes.
Sliding shutters are popularly used in small bedroom wardrobe designs because they don’t take up floor space when you open them. They are perfect for tight corners.
- Matte laminate finishes that look clean.
In areas with warm and humid weather, we prefer matte laminates over glossy finishes. Shutters in concrete, textured stone, or linen patterns stay clean for longer and require low maintenance. They do not show fingerprints, smudge marks, or even minor scratches easily. Also, they don’t peel easily and do not trap moisture.
- Wardrobe panels that allow ventilation.
Ventilated wardrobe panels are a necessity in humid climates…otherwise, when there’s no airflow, clothes start smelling musty. Hence, our bedroom wardrobe designers design slim slots or cane inserts in the shutters to keep insides of your wardrobe dry and help garments breathe.
But if you don’t want them because of dust, pollution, insects or pests, the next solution might be better suited for you.
- Build a dehumidifier pocket in the wardrobe.
One of the latest trends in wardrobe designs is to make a hidden shelf in the lower shelf where one can keep silica gel blocks or perhaps, a mini rechargeable dehumidifier. This discreet low-cost addition in the wardrobe keeps it fresh, especially in homes where ACs don’t run 24x7.
Here’s an advice here:
- Silica gel blocks are usually safe. They are inert and do not normally release smells or toxins. Just make sure you do not use low-quality ones.
- Also, if you have kids or pets that may reach them and ingest them, you should avoid using them.
- Build an overhead loft that blends into the wall.
When your bedroom is small, every inch matters. Keeping your luggage, documents, off-season apparels, and infrequently used items in overhead lofts becomes necessary. But this loft doesn’t have to be old-school and boxy.
Slim modular panels, soft and curved edges, and shadow gaps (recess lines between the loft and the wall) can give it a floating effect and make it a part of the bedroom decor.
- Build pocket door wardrobes.
These days, pocket door wardrobes are becoming more and more popular. Sliding shutters move along the outer edge of the walls, while pocket doors slide into a wall cavity giving your room a more open and seamless look.
If the cabinet depth is at least 20 inches and thick wardrobe body is at least 3/4th inch, we might recommend pocket door wardrobes for your small bedroom.
- Build anti-fog mirror shutters.
Mirrors open up a small bedroom instantly. But the problem with mirrors is that they blur over time, especially in humid weather. That’s why we, at Garrison Grove, use high-quality mirrors with anti-fog coating on our wardrobe doors.
They are low maintenance, give you an illusion of space, and a functional dresser without taking up additional space.
- Use fusion of cane and moisture-resistant laminate.
For bedroom wardrobes where the end-users would keep their daily wear and everyday clothing, our wardrobe designers sometimes suggest cane and laminate combinations. Laminate holds the structure better and makes our wardrobes more durable while we use cane for central panels or some of the select shutters in the wardrobe.
We do warn our clients that cane allows good ventilation but it also allows dust in. So, if you live on the lower floors, especially near a road or a construction site, it might not be a good choice for your home.
Also, one should avoid keeping premium fabrics that need more care (like silk, wool, and formal wear) in shelves with cane shutters.
- Build compact corner wardrobes with curved edges.
In a small bedroom, every inch and every corner matters. So, if your room has an unused corner, we recommend installing a compact L-shaped wardrobe there with soft edges. The curves break rigid lines of the room and you get extra full-height storage space for your seasonal shoes, gym wear, handbags, office bags, backpacks, or essentials you don’t want to keep on side tables (such as your car or bike keys).
You can also use it as a cleaning utility closet where you can keep your brooms, mops, vacuum cleaner, and other cleaning supplies - neatly stored away from the plain sight.
- Smart internal zoning in floor-to-ceiling wardrobes maximise space.
A good wardrobe design is not only about aesthetics and durability. Interiors and ease of using the wardrobe are crucial - especially for small bedrooms. Hence, we recommend using adjustable shelves, slim drawers for accessories, pull-down hanging rods, wire baskets, and moisture-proof LED lighting.
The idea is that everything has a proper place so your bedroom looks uncluttered and well-organised at all times.
